Kinderdagverblijf Kantutita

Kantutita, situated near the large Cancha market in Cochabamba, has been established by an involved group of Bolivian women. The aim is to provide a day-care centre for children of young mothers, which allows them to continue working. Kantutita now offers women with a low and irregular income the possibility to have their children looked after. Each day around eighty children between 6 months and 5 years attend day-care.

The current director Dr Aída Sanches de Iriarte has worked hard since 1999 to guarantee the existence of this children’s day-care centre. Due to the hardship of the families who use Kantutita, this is a difficult task and the staff members are frequently unpaid for some months. The income of the staff is very low (400 Bolivianos per month), but they carry out their work with much commitment. With the help of SNKP-Bolivia the staff members have been trained in language formation. SNKP also provided them with a computer and printer.

The Kantutita day-care centre has an active parents’ committee. They are involved and proactive in work projects, including collecting money in Bolivia for the Kantutita.

In 2003, SNKP member Sandra Sneep worked as a volunteer at Kantutita.

In 2005, with the financial assistance of Maurice and Jolanda, the roof of the day-care centre was repaired. Architect Ronald Rivero (former member of Ñaupaqman) planned and supervised these improvements. In the same year SNKP donated blankets to the day-care centre. In addition, the Dutch public school “de Wissel” in Zeeland conducted a Christmas collection for education material (organised by Vicky Wiessner).
