SNKP-Bolivia, in collaboration with the foundation “Stichting voor Hulp aan Straatkinderen”, has built a school for children with learning and/or behavioural problems in Cochabamba. The total “begroting” was approximately $55,000 (US), of which SNKP contributed $40,000. Important donors include the foundations: Louisa Stichting, Mundo Crasti Meliori, and “Derde Wereld Fonds” from Atos Origin.
The building project was a collaboration with SEDUCA. Architect Ronald Rivero (former participant of the Naupaqman study group) has designed the building. This design takes into account the special needs of the residents, and draws on the philosophies of Reggio Emilia and “Whole Language”, both of which address the importance of language formation.
The school opened in February 2006. There is room for a maximum of 12 pupils per class. The aim is to support children with learning problems for one or two years in this school, in order to allow them to take part again in the regular school system.
The school has a double function as a regular elementary school with special programs and as a knowledge centre that trains teachers from other elementary schools. The lessons follow the regular curriculum, with the support of the methodology for language formation, which is complemented with maths and computer lessons.
SNKP will remain involved in the development of the school’s curriculum and will continue training of the teaching staff.
During the June-July winter holidays, a cooking station will be installed, which will allow for cooking classes in the lesson roster. Another planned learning activity for the children is building the school garden. They will work in collaboration with a teacher and garden architect.
